A couple months ago I picked up this 16 pack of "4d Puzzle Model" 1:87 car kits from Aliexpress.
It was $17 shipped, though sometimes it's even cheaper on ebay.

It's a nice variety of cars. Though they are all foreign and lean toward luxury, there are alot of "regular" sedans and coupes and aren't too many sports cars.
They come unassembled in a couple bags of parts on a sprue and with an instruction sheet. They are pretty nice models except that they have terrible slogans, swooshes and stuff on the roof and hood.
Luckily alcohol and elbow grease takes care of that. Before and After:
They assemble without glue which is good because I want to repaint some of these at some point. Here's a completed BMW.
The printing is not high-end-amazing but pretty darn good for a one buck model.
They even have opening doors!
So here's where the plot thickens. Walthers also sells these cars already assembled but with random colors for $4 each. I'm not sure, but I think they were available via Ali long before they appeared at Walthers.

This is the exact same as the white Jag in my set, right down to the really cheezy roof decals. I don't like the hood art either, but I left it because my son liked it.
They say they are "Herpa...by Promotex" which seems a bit misleading. Though nice, these clearly aren't quite up to Herpa standards so it looks like what we have here are Herpa branding generic Chineese models via Walthers. I don't think Walthers is ripping anyone off (though using the "Herpa" name seems a little shady) for these but I'd rather pay a buck each shipped and do the assembly myself than $4 each before shipping
Sounds like the usual web of suppliers, distibutors, brands and producers that we in the HO world are quite used to.
